How GitHub Actions billing works now
GitHub bills hosted runners per minute at a rate set by operating system and size. Linux 2-core costs $0.006 a minute, Windows $0.010 and macOS $0.062, so one macOS minute costs about ten Linux minutes. Each job is rounded up to the next whole minute, which is why many tiny jobs cost more than their run time suggests. Plans include a monthly dollar amount of usage ($12 on Free, $18 on Pro and Team, $300 on Enterprise Cloud) for standard runners, and standard runners are free on public repositories.
Where the money usually goes
In most bills we've looked at, the cost comes from macOS jobs, matrix builds that multiply jobs per run, and workflows that run on every push to every branch. Caching dependencies, cancelling superseded runs with concurrency, path filters and moving iOS builds to fewer runs usually beat switching vendors. See GitHub Actions pricing and minute optimization for the full playbook.
Questions people ask
How much does GitHub Actions cost per minute?
As of October 2026, standard Linux 2-core runners cost $0.006 per minute, Linux 1-core $0.002, Windows 2-core $0.010 and macOS $0.062. Larger runners range from $0.012 per minute for a 4-core Linux machine upward.
How many free GitHub Actions minutes do I get?
Plans now include a dollar amount rather than minutes: $12 a month on Free, $18 on Pro and Team, and $300 on Enterprise Cloud, applied to standard runners. On Linux 2-core runners, $18 covers 3,000 minutes. Standard runners are free for public repositories.
Why is my GitHub Actions bill higher than expected?
Usually macOS jobs (about ten times the Linux rate), matrix builds that multiply the number of jobs, per-job rounding up to whole minutes, and workflows triggered on every push. Group cost by workflow and runner type to find the biggest line.
